A Village Steeped in History
Pyrgos Village, located in the heart of Santorini, is one of the island’s most charming and well-preserved traditional settlements. Perched atop a hill, this picturesque village offers a glimpse into Santorini’s rich history, away from the bustling crowds of the more famous tourist spots. With its narrow winding streets, whitewashed houses, and stunning panoramic views, Pyrgos is a must-visit destination for those looking to experience the authentic side of Santorini.
Pyrgos was once the capital of Santorini and remains one of the island’s best-preserved medieval villages. The village is built around a Venetian castle, known as Kasteli, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle was constructed to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks, and its strategic location atop the hill provided a clear view of the surrounding areas. Today, the remains of the castle offer a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past, with many of the original structures still standing.
The castle ruins are the focal point of the village. As you explore the narrow streets leading up to the Kasteli, you’ll come across beautiful churches, traditional houses, and charming courtyards. The walk to the top of the castle is rewarded with breathtaking views of the island and the Aegean Sea.
